Engine Protection

Introduction

Engine failure is the transport industry's nightmare. It involves untimely expensive repairs which upset the repairs and maintenance budget, causes late deliveries, involves downtime and loss of revenue of having to hire a replacement vehicle.

All these problems can be minimised by installing a Safestop Engine Protection System.

What's in the box

Equipment consists of an epoxy encapsulated control module, dedicated wiring harness, dashboard display unit and a high frequency Piezo buzzer. Standard engine equipment includes switches for low oil pressure, high water temperature low water level and a high flow fuel valve with all the necessary fittings and piping. If required, systems are available with a maximum of 5 protection circuits. Extras can include switches for engine, transmission and hydraulic oil temperatures and levels.

Function

The system's uniqueness is its built in diagnostics and pre-warning functions.

If any circuit is tripped due to a pre-set parameter being exceeded, switch failure, or loss of continuity of a signal wire, the driver is alerted to the impending shut down of the engine by the appropriate circuit light and buzzer. This 10 second pre-warning allows the driver to take necessary action by moving the vehicle to the side of the road before engine power loss occurs.

By virtue of the priority fault circuit and the in-cab display unit, the system is self-diagnostic. If any, or all circuits trip, only one control light indicates at a time. Downtime is reduced dramatically as the fault which caused the breakdown is immediately identified. When rectified, the system indicates the next fault (if present) or returns to the normal start mode.

The Safestop Engine Protection System is fail safe and any fault with the engine switches, wiring or main control module causes the engine to shut down. Simply put, if the vehicle leaves the depot the system is working.

Operation

As the ignition is turned on the red oil pressure light, the green 'Go' light and the buzzer turn on. If no attempt is made to start the engine within 10 seconds the 'Go' light turns off leaving the oil pressure light and the buzzer on. (A stationary engine has no oil pressure).

To reset the Auto Start override the ignition switch must be turned off and then on again. This regenerates another 10 seconds of automatic override for the oil pressure circuit. As long as the 'Go' light is on the fuel valve is open and the engine will run. As soon as the engine is running and oil pressure builds up, the oil pressure light turns off, leaving the green 'Go' light on.

In the event of a fault the respective circuit light immediately turns on together with the buzzer. The 'Go' light remains on for a further 10 seconds. After this period the 'Go' light turns off, the fuel valve closes and the engine stalls. Only the circuit responsible for stopping the engine will be displayed.
