Introduction

Previously, transport operating budgets could not justify the expensive installation of equipment to protect against excessive idling of vehicles. However, with the cost of fuel increasing, it has now become a viable exercise. In an effort to offer a single purpose unit and to keep equipment cost down, Safestop has specifically designed the Idle Limiter. This unit will not only save fuel, but will prevent unnecessary wear of engine parts due to excessive idling.

Its ease of installation allows for minimum standing time of the vehicle and the microprocessor driven electronics offer accurate and drift free settings.

What's in the box

Equipment consists of an epoxy encapsulated control module, dedicated wiring harness, gearbox transducer or rev signal detector, high frequency Piezo buzzer, diesel fuel valve with fuel line fittings and fuel hose, or relay.

Function

Idle Limiting is dependent upon vehicle movement. As soon as the vehicle is stationary, or the engine revolutions fall below a set parameter, the timer turns on. After 4½ minutes the buzzer turns on. After another 30 seconds the buzzer sounds continuously and the fuel valve, or relay, closes, which causes the engine to stall. The engine can be restarted by turning the ignition switch off and then on again.

If the Safestop unit detects vehicle movement or an increase in engine revolutions, the timer will reset, thus the unit will only shut the engine down when it has been idling for more than 4½ minutes.

The timer (5 minutes) allows a cold vehicle to start up and build up sufficient air pressure without cutting the engine.

Operation

Idle: Pulses from the gearbox transducer or revolution detector is used to establish whether the vehicle is in motion. As long as the control module detects pulses from the transducer, the internal timer is switched off. As soon as there are no pulses, the timer is activated and after 5 minutes, closes the fuel valve or relay. There is a 30 second warning that the vehicle is about to shut down. The Idle Limiter will not accumulate time. When reset it will begin to count down from the beginning of its 5-minute time cycle.
