Introduction

Previously, transport operating budgets could not justify the expensive installation of equipment to protect against the 3 main causes of vehicle abuse; excessive idling, over-revving and excessive speeding. In an effort to offer more for less, Safestop has specifically designed a sophisticated 3 in 1 unit. The Idle, Revs and Speed Limiter integrates these functions into one economically affordable package.

Its ease of installation and intelligent electronics offer a combination of functions to suit your operation. Any of these 3 functions can be selected at any time, either before or after installation. The microprocessor driven electronics offer accurate and drift free settings.

What's in the box

Equipment consists of an epoxy encapsulated control module, dedicated wiring harness, gearbox transducer, high frequency Piezo buzzer, the option of a dashboard mounted display unit, diesel fuel valve, fuel line fittings and fuel hose.

Function

The IRS Limiter works by temporarily interrupting the fuel supply to the engine when a pre-defined operating parameter is exceeded.

Assume the speed is set to 85 km/h. At +/- 5% below this point, i.e., 81 km/h, the speed LED on the display unit and the warning buzzer turn on and remain on while speed is maintained between 81 and 85 km/h. However, if the vehicle exceeds 85 km/h, the ‘Go’ LED turns off and the fuel valve closes. Due to fuel starvation the vehicle slows down. As soon as speed falls below 81 km/h, the fuel valve opens, the buzzer and speed display LED turn off and normal power is restored.

Over-rev Limiting works in exactly the same way. The operation of the speed and/or rev limiter will depend upon which parameter is first exceeded.

Idle Limiting is dependent upon vehicle movement. As soon as the vehicle is stationary, the timer turns on. After 4½ minutes the buzzer and the idle LED turn on intermittently. After another 30 seconds the ‘Go’ LED turns off , the idle LED turns on, the buzzer sounds continuously and the fuel valve closes, which causes the engine to stall. The engine can be restarted by either turning the ignition switch off and then on again, or by moving forward slightly.

Operation

Speed: As pulses from the gearbox transducer reach a pre-set point, the control module responds by turning on the display LED and the buzzer. After a further 5% increase of pulses. The fuel valve closes. A reduction of 5% of the pulses, which correspond to the respective amount of speed, opens the fuel valve. Simultaneously the buzzer and speed LED turn off.

Revs: Impulses from the ‘W’ terminal of the alternator supply the signal needed for engine revolutions. At a pre-set point, the control module is triggered which causes the same response as the speed function except that the revs LED on the display unit is activated.

Idle: Pulses from the gearbox transducer are used to establish whether the vehicle is in motion. As long as the control module detects pulses from the transducer, the internal timer is switched off. As soon as there are no pulses, the timer is activated and after 5 minutes, closes the fuel valve. There is a 30 second warning that the vehicle is about to shut down. The Idle Limiter will not accumulate time. When reset it will begin to count down from the beginning of its 5 minute time cycle.
